About Me

Srimal de Mel is a professional pianist, composer, and music educator based in Torrance, California. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from California State University, Fullerton, and has spent over a decade helping students of all ages and abilities build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.

As both a performer and educator, Srimal brings professional experience into every lesson. He has released three original albums and performed nationwide including the Reno Jazz Festival, the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, and the Central Avenue Jazz Festival. Whether introducing children to their first nursery rhymes or mentoring high schoolers, music majors, and working artists, he tailors each lesson to the individual, balancing technique and creativity.

Srimal’s musical journey began in middle school when he picked up the saxophone to avoid taking Home Economics. Band sparked his interest, but it wasn't until he found his brother's keyboard and taught himself the Tetris theme song that he truly fell in love with music. Over the past 18 years of playing piano, he has experienced hundreds of "Tetris" moments - milestones on a lifelong path. Helping his students experience those same moments has been the most rewarding part of his teaching career.

While jazz is his specialty, Srimal believes every genre is worth studying. From Classical to Jazz, World Music to Modern Pop … and yes, even the music of video games … there is so much to be learned and loved. That’s why you are just as likely to catch him studying J.S. Bach as Stevie Wonder.
